Term One – Fundamentals of Floristry
Learning and Establishing the Elements & Principles of Floral Design
Term One focuses on establishing a strong foundation in floristry. Students learn the fundamental skills and techniques required to work confidently with flowers and floral materials.
The term focuses on understanding and applying the elements and principles of floral design, including colour, texture, form, line, space, proportion, balance, rhythm, harmony and focal areas.
Students will develop their understanding of floral mechanics, conditioning flowers, basic design techniques and the correct use of tools and materials. The aim is to give students a strong foundation and understanding of floristry before progressing into more specialised areas of the industry.
Term Two – Memorial Tributes & Wiring Techniques
Learning Floral Design, Wiring & Funeral Floristry
Term Two focuses on memorial and sympathy floristry, teaching students how to design and create appropriate floral tributes for funeral and memorial services.
Students will learn about the different styles of memorial floral designs, how to interpret a client's requirements and how to create designs that are respectful, meaningful and appropriate for the occasion.
This term will also introduce and develop wiring techniques, including the correct methods for wiring and manipulating flowers and foliage for different floral applications.
Students will gain an understanding of the professional requirements of sympathy work, including design, mechanics, presentation, pricing and working with clients during sensitive occasions.
Term Three – Weddings & Events
Applying the Elements & Principles of Floral Design to Event Work
Term Three focuses on the exciting area of wedding and event floristry.
Students will learn how to apply the elements and principles of floral design to larger-scale event work, including weddings, celebrations and corporate events.
The term will cover the different floral requirements for events, including bouquets, wearable flowers, table arrangements, ceremony designs and larger-scale installations.
Students will learn how to interpret a client's vision, develop a cohesive floral concept, select appropriate flowers and foliage, understand colour palettes and create designs that work together throughout an event.
The focus will also be on the practical and professional aspects of event floristry, including planning, preparation, mechanics, installation, pack-down, costing and working within a client's budget.
